Halloween is next week. If you still don’t have a costume, you’re not alone.

Halloween in Overland Park is a great time! There are pumpkin patches and corn mazes just down the road, spooky nights at the Farmstead, trick-or-treating in downtown and neighborhoods that go all out with the decorations. So, there’s a lot to dress up for.

But you don’t need a pricey costume or a big plan, either. If you’re searching for Halloween costume ideas, we got you. Overland Park is full of inspiration. Just look at your weekend routine, your favorite trail or the spot where you always run into someone you know.

We put together costume ideas inspired by the people, places and habits that make OP feel like home, and most of them can be pulled together with items you already have.

Your Results

Mostly A’s 🌅 The Early Risers
Mostly B’s 🦋 The Social Butterflies
Mostly C’s 📍 The Hyper-Locals
Mostly D’s 🐐 The Kids at Heart

Got a tie? Lucky you. There’s plenty to do in OP, so use it as an excuse to dress up twice this year.

🌅 The Early Risers

You’re up before your alarm, and you like it that way. By the time most people are making coffee, you’ve already walked a few miles, picked up fresh flowers and said good morning to at least three neighbors. You know which trails get the best light, which vendors sell out first and that the best parking spot goes to whoever shows up first. For you, OP is best enjoyed outside and early.

The Farmers Market Regular

How to pull it off: Iced coffee in one hand, a bouquet poking out of a canvas tote and a bag of produce you definitely have a plan for.

The Indian Creek Trail Regular

How to pull it off: Running gear, a fitness watch, earbuds and a water bottle. Say “oh, just a quick 10 miles” casually and often.

The Arboretum Golden Hour Photographer

How to pull it off: A neutral outfit, a camera around your neck and a few leaves tucked in your pocket for “texture.” Your catchphrase is “Wait, just one more.”

🦋 The Social Butterflies

If something is happening in OP, you know about it, and you’re probably bringing a few friends. Your calendar is full, your group chat is always busy and you’ve never met a happy hour, rec league or watch party you didn’t like. You make plans in two minutes and somehow always know someone wherever you go.

The Pickleball Convert

How to pull it off: Visor, paddle, athletic skirt or shorts, and an inability to talk about anything else. Practice saying, “We should play at SERV sometime.”

The Corporate Woods Professional

How to pull it off: Business casual, a lanyard and badge, a coffee and a phone you check every 30 seconds. Greet everyone with, “Do you have a quick minute?”

The Fan Fest Superfan

How to pull it off: A scarf, face paint, a flag worn as a cape and a voice that hasn’t quite recovered since summer. Bring up 2026 at least once an hour.

📍 The Hyper-Locals

You don’t just live in OP. You know it. You’ve tried the new spot before it hit everyone’s feed, you have a go-to order everywhere you go and you have strong opinions on where to find the best ramen, tacos and coffee. You know the stories behind the buildings you drive past every day, and friends text you for restaurant recommendations. Supporting local is part of your personality (as it should be).

The Strang Hall Indecisive Eater

How to pull it off: Pin a different menu item to each part of your outfit, like a taco on your hat, a pizza slice on your shirt and a drink in your hand. Why choose?

Find your inspiration: Strang Hall

The King Louie West Bowler

How to pull it off: A vintage two-tone bowling shirt with your name stitched on the pocket, bowling shoes and a bowling bag. Your catchphrase: “Did you know the museum used to be a bowling alley?”

Find your inspiration: Johnson County Museum

The Taproom Regular

How to pull it off: A flannel, a beanie and a homemade flight paddle (a strip of cardboard with four small cups). Add a name tag that says, “Ask me what’s new on tap.”

Find your inspiration: Discourse Brewing

The Parade of Hearts Heart

How to pull it off: Cut a giant heart out of cardboard, paint your own design and wear it like a sandwich board. Make everyone guess where you’re “installed.”

🐐 The Kids at Heart

You’ll never be too old for the fun stuff. You’ve fed the goats more times than you can count, you think dinosaurs are cool at any age and you’re the first one to say yes to the trampoline park. With kids or without them, you’re all in on making memories, and your weekends are proof that OP has plenty to keep every age entertained.

The Deanna Rose Goat

How to pull it off: Goat ears, a small horn headband and a feed cone. It works for kids, couples or the whole family as a herd.

The Prairiefire T-Rex

How to pull it off: An inflatable dinosaur costume and a “Museum at Prairiefire” name tag. Just try clapping.

Bonus Costumes for the Truly Committed

The Metcalf Orange Cone

This is for anyone who’s spent quality time on Metcalf lately.

How to pull it off: Wear all orange with white reflective tape stripes, and stand very still. Extra credit for dramatically redirecting traffic at the party.

The Downtown OP Clock Tower

A downtown landmark, now in costume form. This one has group costume potential: pair it with a Farmers Market Regular.

How to pull it off: Turn a tall cardboard box into the tower, paint on a clock face and set it to your favorite time of day (8 a.m. on a Saturday, obviously).

The Growing Kindness Poppy

This one is sweet, simple and very OP, inspired by the new poppy sculpture at the Arboretum.

How to pull it off: A red petal collar with an all-green outfit.

Let the Holiday Season Begin

There’s still plenty of time to put your costume to work. Bring the kids (or your inner kid) to Trick or Treat in Downtown OP on Saturday, Oct. 24. Brave the spooky fun at Night of the Living Farm at Deanna Rose on Oct. 23 and 24. Or simply hand out candy in your favorite neighborhood on the 31st.

Halloween is just the start of one of our favorite times of year in Overland Park. Soon it’ll be time for local holiday markets, glowing lights, shopping small and plenty of cozy winter plans. We’ll be sharing guides along the way to help you make the most of every bit of it.

But first, find your costume, grab your candy and enjoy the fun.

Happy Halloween, OP.
