Overland Park’s growth, achievements, and future were on full display at this year’s State of the City address. Hosted by the Chamber of Commerce at the Overland Park Convention Center, the event brought together residents, business leaders, city staff, and elected officials to hear from Mayor Curt Skoog about what’s ahead for the community.
Building on a Strong Foundation
Mayor Skoog highlighted how Overland Park continues to build on its reputation as a safe, vibrant, and forward-thinking city. From the passage of Vision Metcalf and redevelopment at 95th and Antioch to the resurgence of downtown, the city’s investments are strengthening neighborhoods and supporting a thriving local economy. He also shared updates on public safety, transportation, housing, and community spaces that directly impact the quality of life for residents.
Welcoming the World: 2026 World Cup
A big focus this year is Overland Park’s role in the 2026 World Cup. The city has worked with partners across the region to prepare for visitors, including new transportation options, welcome centers at Oak Park Mall and the Convention Center, and enhanced public safety staffing. Beyond soccer, the city is rolling out a full summer of events, from downtown watch parties to concerts in the park, to showcase Overland Park’s community spirit and hospitality.
Parks, Recreation, and Community Spaces
Mayor Skoog also highlighted investments in parks and recreation, including new playgrounds, splash pads, inclusive programming, and downtown gathering spaces. These projects are designed to bring residents together, encourage healthy lifestyles, and support local economic development. These projects reflect Overland Park’s commitment to accessibility and community engagement for all ages.
Housing and Commercial Development
Mayor Skoog also focused on housing and development initiatives. Programs like Portfolio Homes provide more housing options and affordability, while commercial projects like BluHawk, Aspiria, and Tap-Ins enhance entertainment and economic opportunities. Updates to the Uniform Development Ordinance (UDO) ensure growth is sustainable and aligned with community priorities.
City Branding and Civic Pride
The 2026 State of the City was also a chance to showcase the city’s new brand, reflecting Overland Park’s identity as modern, bold, and leadership-focused. The new logo, flag, and civic branding symbolize community pride and highlight the city’s commitment to excellence and inclusion. Residents can showcase this pride with OP swag and flags at community events.
Looking Ahead
Mayor Skoog’s address reinforced that Overland Park isn’t just keeping up; it’s setting the standard. With world-class infrastructure, safe neighborhoods, thriving businesses, and engaging community spaces, the city continues to offer residents a high quality of life and a bright future.
Overland Park residents can take pride in a city that invests in its people, neighborhoods, and economy. The State of the City address is a reminder that the best is yet to come.
