Overland Park continues to earn national recognition, this time as the No. 2 safest city in America for 2026 according to a new report from WalletHub. The annual study compared more than 180 cities across the country using dozens of factors tied to community wellbeing, including crime rates, traffic safety, natural disaster risk, and financial stability.

While rankings like this are always exciting, this one says something bigger about what life in Overland Park actually feels like day to day. Safety here is not just about emergency response or low crime rates. It is about strong neighborhoods, community involvement, economic opportunity, and the overall quality of life that makes people feel comfortable putting down roots.

According to the report, Overland Park stood out nationally for both physical and financial safety. The city ranked especially well for low pedestrian fatality rates, low traffic fatalities, low poverty rates, and strong retirement readiness. WalletHub also highlighted Overland Park’s low unemployment rate, high median credit score, and housing affordability compared to income levels.

The study noted that Overland Park has:

  • The lowest share of residents living in poverty
  • One of the highest retirement plan participation rates in the country
  • Strong road safety metrics
  • Low uninsured motorist rates
  • High overall financial stability

That combination helped push Overland Park near the very top of the national rankings, just behind Warwick, Rhode Island.

Local coverage from KCTV5 also highlighted the role the community plays in maintaining that reputation. Overland Park Police Department spokesperson John Lacy credited residents for staying engaged and involved.

“If it wasn’t for our community stepping up to the plate, if they see something, they always say something,” Lacy shared in a recent interview.

That sense of partnership is part of what continues to make Overland Park stand out. Whether it is safe neighborhoods, connected trails, highly rated schools, strong local businesses, or access to jobs and healthcare, many of the things people look for when choosing where to live are already happening here.

And while rankings are never the full story, they can help confirm what many residents already know: Overland Park continues to be one of the most stable, connected, and community-focused places to live in the country.
