Earning a master’s degree while balancing work, family, and everyday life is not always easy. For many professionals, traditional programs with fixed schedules and semester timelines can make continuing education feel difficult to fit into an already busy routine.

That’s part of what makes a new option from KU Edwards Campus so interesting.

Beginning in fall 2026, students will be able to earn their KU Master’s Degree right here in Overland Park. KU Edwards will launch its first competency-based education programs through a new format called Jayhawk Flex. Instead of focusing on time spent sitting in a classroom, the programs are designed around demonstrating real knowledge and skills, giving students the ability to move at their own pace.

The first two graduate programs available through Jayhawk Flex will be Project Management and Human Organizational Performance Effectiveness (HOPE), both offered through KU’s School of Professional Studies.

“Advancing your career shouldn’t require putting it on hold, KU’s competency-based education programs are designed for working professionals who want to work smarter and earn a valuable credential more quickly. It is graduate education built for real life,” said Marilu Goodyear, HOPE program director.

Built for Working Professionals

One of the biggest advantages of the competency-based model is flexibility. Students can work through coursework when it fits their schedule, whether that means early mornings, evenings, weekends, or between meetings during the workday.

The format also allows students with previous experience in a subject area to move more quickly through material they already know while spending extra time where they need it most.

Rather than relying heavily on traditional exams, students complete applied assessments and projects designed to reflect real workplace challenges and situations. The goal is to make learning feel practical, career-focused, and directly connected to professional growth.

Importantly, self-paced does not mean unsupported. Faculty members still work closely with students throughout the process by providing guidance, feedback, and individualized support.
