Turns out people are not just moving to Overland Park for good schools and quiet neighborhoods anymore. A new study from StorageCafe ranked Overland Park among the best cities in the country for young couples, thanks to a mix of strong incomes, affordable living, short commutes, and plenty of things to do together.
The report analyzed more than 130 cities across the country and looked at factors like housing costs, work-life balance, entertainment, parks, safety, and overall quality of life. Overland Park came in at No. 8 overall and stood out for giving couples something that is getting harder to find in many larger cities: breathing room.
According to the study, residents ages 20 to 44 in Overland Park earn well above the national average while spending a smaller percentage of their income on rent. The city also scored high for personal living space and manageable commute times. In other words, people here are spending less time stuck in traffic and more time actually enjoying where they live.
And honestly, that tracks.
A typical weekend in Overland Park can look pretty different depending on what you’re into. Maybe it is dinner in Downtown OP, drinks and pickleball at SERV, walking the trails at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, grabbing coffee before the Farmers Market, or catching live music around Prairiefire. The city has quietly built a lifestyle that feels balanced. Busy enough to keep things interesting, but manageable enough to actually enjoy it.
The study also pointed to a growing trend happening across the country. More young adults are choosing mid-sized cities over massive metros because they offer a better mix of affordability, opportunity, and quality of life. That is something the Kansas City area, especially Johnson County, continues to benefit from.
While rankings are always subjective, this one felt worth highlighting because it focused less on flashy tourism or nightlife and more on the day-to-day realities that shape how people live. Things like housing costs, free time, financial stability, and community connection all played a role in the results.
